Has League of Legends Become Bigger Than World of Warcraft?

THE BUZZ: In a press release released by its parent company today, the free-to-play multiplayer online battle game League of Legends has now hit an amazing feat—11.5 million players monthly.
If that is indeed the case, then it puts League of Legends above Blizzard’s World of Warcraft, which currently sits at around 10.3 million players a month.
That number comes via a 280% increase over the game’s monthly player count as it was last tallied in July of this year, and it isn’t the only impressive stat. League of Legends has had 32.5 million players sign up and create an account, the typical number of daily players is around 4.2 million, and at any one time, around 1.3 million players are all online and playing.
“The incredible passion and dedication of our players is positively inspiring,” said Riot Games co-founder and CEO Brandon Beck in the announcement. “Our community’s boundless enthusiasm is why they are central to every decision we make at Riot.”
EGM’s TAKE: Very impressive stats for League of Legends, and a testiment to just how huge the game has become. Of course, the comparison to WoW isn’t totally fair—Blizzard’s long-running MMORPG is now in its seventh year, and is based on the monthly subscription model, versus LoL and its free-to-play format.
