Developer and publisher Techland has released a series of videos that serve as a choose-your-own-adventure prequel to their upcoming first-person slasher, Hellraid.
Titled “Edyn’s Escape” and labeled as an “interactive movie prequel to Hellraid,” the video is set two weeks before the events in the game proper. It depicts the journey of a monk, Brother Edyn, as he tries to escape his monster-occupied monastery. Choices pop up throughout the video in which that allow viewers to help Edyn in his escape in a very choose-your-own-adventure sort of way. For example, in the first video (embedded below), viewers must choose whether Edyn searches a chest or takes a health potion. Clicking on the decision launches a new video based on your selection.
First announced in April, Hellraid features both a single-player campaign and co-op functionality that allows up to three players to plume the hellish depths of its dungeons. Typical of Techland games, it combines the first-person perspective with melee combat (as well as magic, ’cause fantasy y’all). Hellraid will also have a ‘Game Master’ system that’s separate from the campaign that is something of a cross between a D&D Dungeon Master and Left 4 Dead‘s director system.
According to the game’s announcement press release, Hellraid will launch on Windows PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 later this year.
