Hideo Kojima Confirms Development of Metal Gear Solid 5

Hideo Kojima—father of famed gaming hero Solid Snake—has officially acknowledged the existence of Metal Gear Solid 5, as well as given a few slight hints concerning what the game will feature.

The following is a translation of comments Kojima made in an interview with French gaming publication IG Magazine, translated by The Escapist.

On Metal Gear Solid 5
“On the topic of Metal Gear Solid 5, I can tell you two things. There will be more infiltration, spying, and convincing people to do you ‘a favor’ than in the previous MGS. I loved the idea of the social interactions in Deus Ex: Human Revolution that we’ve seen. And if I say more about it, the ninja PR woman behind the door will chop me into pieces.”

On Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
“Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance never pretended to be Metal Gear Solid. It’s not a game about our beloved Solid Snake. It’s a spin-off that tries something different. We haven’t seen the last of Solid Snake, despite the fact that I wanted to let him die at the end of Guns of the Patriots.”

As well, Kojima also confirms that Metal Gear Solid 5 will be using the new Fox Engine. However, what has been shown so far of the engine wasn’t connected with MGS5—it was an interally-created demo to show off some of what the technology could do.

Personally, I think Kojima’s comments about Deus Ex are interesting. Could he be looking to craft a game with more branching-style dialog or player choices, options which are all the rage currently in Western gaming? It certainly wouldn’t surprise me, given Kojima’s style of storytelling. Options like that could certainly also add some fresh new gameplay aspects to the series.
