Holy Cow, Someone Hacked An NES Zapper Gun Into A Real Laser Gun
Posted on September 24, 2012 AT 02:45pm
Somewhere out there, a team of hackers has created a terrifying, yet completely incredible weapon out of a video game peripheral. It’s called the Nintendo Zapper 2W+ Laser Gun, and it’s so rad.
That “2W+” moniker refers to the number of watts that gun can fire in a concentrated beam, which is apparently enough to burn solid metal and singe your eyeballs right out of their sockets.
So, if you anyone brandishing an NES Zapper, run for the damn hills.
As chronicled at North Street Labs, the entire building process was a painstaking affair, using a 445nm diode, batteries, a bit of advancing wiring, a heat sink, and a lot of work shaving down a custom-shaped aluminum housing diameter.
For reference, a single garden variety laser pointer pumps out light at 5 milliWatts. This thing is roughly 400 times more powerful, and basically makes Star Wars possible.
Check out the new NES Zapper in action, and for the love of God, don’t build one and use it outside.
