Bungie recently gave Guardians the first look at one of Destiny 2‘s new upcoming game events: Escalation Protocol.

During Bungie’s April 24th live Twitch stream, which you can see below, the developer showed gameplay of the survival mission, which will launch alongside the game’s third season. It was revealed that Escalation Protocol will be exclusive to owners of the upcoming second story expansion, Warmind, and will be unlocked after completing the campaign within the DLC.

According to lead designers Ben Wommack and Jacob Benton, Escalation Protocol will be similar to public events, but more accessible. Unlike the rotating schedule used for public events, Guardians can start it at any time. To begin the mission, Guardians will activate a beacon that sets off a drone that will pull in hordes of the Hive. The enemies will arrive in seven different waves, with each new wave increasing the difficulty level. While most of the waves will throw high-powered Hive at Guardians, Wommack said the seventh and final wave will house a unique boss fight. There will be five different bosses in total, with each rotating as the main boss every week.

Apart from offering a new challenge to overcome, each boss will also drop a unique item that can only be earned by completing Escalation Protocol. The designers said the loot will range from new weapons to armor, but they all contain perks that will help Guardians take on other events found in Warmind. For example, a new shotgun with a special perk will allow players to melee an enemy and follow up the hit with increased damage shotgun rounds.

In addition to the new weapons, Guardians will also have the chance to use subweapons for a limited time. According to Benton, players will pick up armory codes from enemy drops during the event, which can be used to unlock a special subweapon called Valkyrie lance. Wommack described it as “a magical spear rocket launcher,” which will act as both a melee and ranged weapon. It was also revealed that the Hive swords from Destiny will return. Guardians will be able to destroy Knights in Escalation Protocol, grab the enemy’s dropped sword, and use it for a short time.

During the remainder of the stream, Bungie also touched on the upcoming sandbox changes to Exotics and revealed a few more story details about Warmind. Guardians will be tasked with heading to Mars and uncovering Rasputin’s reasons for setting off a chain of events that have negatively affected the entire solar system. New character Ana Bray will support players through the campaign, acting as a vendor and ally on the battlefield. Players will be able to jump into the new adventure when Warmind laucnhes on May 8th.

Destiny 2 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
