Peter Parker’s better half, Mary Jane Watson, was previously confirmed to be playable in the upcoming Spider-Man, and developer Insomniac Games finally expanded on what the character brings to the experience.
No longer the dated damsel-in-distress archetype, Mary Jane is now a courageous and driven investigative reporter for the universe’s popular newspaper, The Daily Bugle. While she won’t be swinging from the rooftops like Spider-Man, she will have her own role to play in saving the city, using her investigative skills to relay helpful information to Peter.
“She wants to make the world a better place using her skills as a journalist, which is similar to what Peter does as Spider-Man,” writer Jon Paquette told Game Informer. “She just doesn’t go around punching and kicking people like he does.”
Her career path of investigative journalism is what will inform her gameplay. Insomniac has yet to reveal exactly what this will involve, but certain missions will have players controlling the character to some degree.
“It’s more than just cutscenes,” creative director Bryan Intihar said. “You will appreciate her arc. You will understand her story and who she is by actually being her.”
As for the connection between Peter and Mary Jane, the duo are never too far apart, but the game starts at a lull in their romantic relationship. After six months apart, events at the beginning of the game bring them back into each other’s lives.
“It’s serendipitous that she has Spider-Man next to her and the stories kind of follow him, right?” Paquette said. “She’s got a partner there, but it is also a complicated relationship.”
These new details on Mary Jane are part of Game Informer‘s continuing coverage on Spider-Man. Combat, web swinging, and gadgets are some of the other game details revealed by this coverage in recent weeks, with more to come.
Spider-Man is slated to launch September 7th, exclusively on PlayStation 4.
