THE BUZZ: Bethesda is working on a second patch for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, to address some texture issues gamers may be experiencing. They have confirmed that the issue occurs when Skyrim is installed to an Xbox 360. A post made by a Bethesda staff member yesterday afternoon on their official forums stated:
Skyrim uses a lot of dynamic streaming systems, including textures. We’ve seen a few reports of certain textures temporarily scaling down on the Xbox 360, and not scaling back up. We have verified that this issue does not occur when playing off the disk and when the game is fully cached (not installed). Skyrim makes heavy use of the Xbox 360 caching system, and caches over the normal course of play while in menus or interiors. This cache can be wiped when other games are played or when the user manually removes it. We’re working on a solution in the next title update for those who have installed the game.
EGM’s TAKE: It’s a running joke among gamers regarding how glitchy most Bethesda games usually are. If your fellow NPC isn’t stuck in a mountain forcing you to restart a checkpoint, sometimes they appear as a mangled mound of flesh terrifying gamers as they speak and ignore that their limbs are all coming out of a single socket. Games of this scale have a lot of moving parts and there are a lot of things that could go wrong, it’s a small miracle these games work as well as they do.
Installing games to our consoles has become second nature for some gamers ever since Microsoft enabled the feature a few years back. It will be difficult for the obsessive compulsives out there but, it may be better to sit tight and play off the disk for now, at least until Bethesda’s patch is delivered.
