A piece of artwork purported to be leaked concept art from Halo Wars 2, depicting a battle between the humans and the Covenant, has surfaced.
The supposed leak comes from the Twitter user Lifelower, a self-described “XBLA watchdog,” who posted two images without comment. One appears to be a title card that would appear on the Xbox Games Store, while the other is a wider view of the same image that might appear when opening the game.
If the low-resolution image is real, it offers some hints to what we can expect to see included in Halo Wars 2, the second real-time-strategy offshoot of Microsoft’s popular shooter franchise. The artwork features a few of the series’ most iconic figures, such as Spartan soldiers, the Covenant, Scarab tanks, and the Ark. As GamesRadar noted, the Ark looks like it’s still in one piece, which means Halo Wars 2 could take place prior to the Ark’s destruction at the end of Halo 3—perhaps even during the later stages of the Human-Covenant War, judging by the number of Spartans and Brutes on the battlefield. That would be a marked shift from the first Halo Wars, which was set decades before the original Halo: Combat Evolved and isolated itself from the main series as much as possible.
Halo Wars 2 is scheduled to release this fall on Xbox One and Windows 10, and Microsoft promised that the game will be playable at E3.
