The year in gaming got off to a pretty strong start with three major titles dominating in January, all from Japanese developers, according to the monthly NPD Report.
Kingdom Hearts III was the best-selling title across all platforms in January 2019. Its launch sales more than doubled those of Kingdom Hearts II, probably due in part to the fact that it debuted on more than one platform.
Resident Evil 2 came in second and even outsold Kingdom Hearts III on the Xbox One. The remake’s launch dollar sales were almost three times as much as the 1998 original, which also debuted in a January.
New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe was the third overall best-selling title in January, which is especially impressive considering it was a Switch exclusive and a port of a Wii U title, and considering the NPD only counts its physical sales. Speaking of, Deluxe‘s launch sales were 30 percent higher than those of the original Wii U version.
The other January launch title to make the top 10, Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown, was the seventh best-selling title in January and even set a new franchise record for best launch sales.
As for previously released titles, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate outsold Red Dead Redemption 2, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 outsold both of them.
Where sales numbers aren’t as cheery are with the hardware. Total hardware sales were down 28 percent compared to January 2018, with the Switch taking the top spot as the best-selling console last month. Out of the big three, It was the only platform to sell more units than it did last January.
