John Carmack developing software for Oculus Rift, new prototype unveiled

John Carmack, formerly of id Software now full-time chief technical officer on the Oculus Rift, is also developing software for the virtual reality device, Engadget reports.

“He’s working on a lot of exciting tech,” Iribe told Engadget. “But, his heart and soul and history certainly lies in the game-development side. That’s always been Epic’s philosophy. And it’s what allowed them to make what they made. It’s certainly been id’s philosophy in the past. It’s been John Carmack’s philosophy—you gotta eat your own dog food here, and develop internal content also.”

At CES yesterday, Oculus unveiled a new prototype of the Rift called “Crystal Cove,” which features positional tracking and an OLED display designed to reduce motion more to create a better, more comfortable user experience.

“Low persistence is really, really important.” Oculus founder Palmer Luckey told Polygon. “It’s probably the most important thing we’re showing. It doesn’t sound really exciting… but it’s incredible the difference low persistence makes. You really have to see it. It’s mind-blowing.”

As for a final retail version of the Rift, Oculus remains dodgy, but did tell Polygon that they think 2014 is going to be “a big year for VR.”
