As frightening as it is, John Madden is openly denouncing any evidence of the “Madden cover curse”—a mysterious string of injuries to the video game’s cover athletes—by citing that he’s never suffered any freak physical accident of his own. Considering how many years Madden’s been on the cover of his own game, that’s either incredibly brave, or incredibly stupid.
Now, maybe John Madden is safe, because he technically has never been an active NFL player due to a premature training camp injury that sidelined him in 1959.
Or maybe—just maybe—John Madden himself is the source of the curse, his career-ending injury somehow tied to the video game franchise he fronts, doomed to strike down today’s prime NFL stars.
Where I come from, that’s called witchcraft, intentional or not. Whatever the case, the legendary NFL coach doesn’t think that Madden NFL 13 is going to continue the stretch, as he told the Detroit Free Press when discussing cover athlete Calvin Johnson of the Detroit Lions:
“I was on the cover for several years, and I never once even pulled a hamstring,” Madden said, breaking into a laugh. “It’s a violent sport. Injuries are going to happen.”
Madden visited Lions training camp today with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. He briefly spoke with this year’s Madden NFL cover boy, Calvin Johnson, prior to the Lions’ morning practice.
And afterwards, Madden sung the praises of the man otherwise known as Megatron.
“If there was such a thing (as a curse), you couldn’t ask for a better man to prove that wrong than who we’ve got this year,” Madden said about Johnson. “He might be as close to indestructible as we’ve ever had on the cover. Maybe I shouldn’t say that…that might…I’m not going to talk about that any more.”
Poor Johnson. If there’s anything that makes a curse stronger, it’s publicly denying that it even exists at all. Oh, well. Here’s hoping you make it through the next few years without anything bad happening to your knees.
