Only one new release made the top ten in July 2018’s NPD Group report, showing just how slow the summer release schedule can be.
Octopath Traveler was the top-selling game in July. The game already sold 1 million copies since its release on July 13th, which is apparently enough to convince Square Enix to make more RPGs in the same vein. In other words, the game is a huge success and earned its place at the top.
What’s more surprising are the other games in the top 10. Grand Theft Auto V was the second best-selling game in July 2018. Let’s take a minute to remember that the game first launched in September 2013. Doing the math, that’s almost five years ago now. Following that in the top five is Mario Kart 8, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, none of which are games that originally launched in 2018.
Mario Tennis Aces, meanwhile, slid all the way down to number 10 after claiming the top spot last month. The only other game released this month that made the top 20 is Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker on Switch, which originally launched for the Wii U in 2014.
As far as hardware goes, Nintendo Switch was the best-selling console in July 2018, reclaiming the top spot for the first time since December 2017. Overall hardware sales saw a 19 percent increase compared to July 2017. This year as a whole is the best for hardware sales since 2011, totaling $1.9 billion so far in 2018.
