Ken Levine reveals would-be BioShock Vita concept

Posted on July 8, 2014 AT 03:35pm

When former Irrational Games creative director Ken Levine revealed a potential PlayStation Vita incarnation of BioShock at Sony’s 2011 E3 press briefing, many were skeptical, dismissing the project as vaporware or unworkable on Sony’s then-upcoming portable platform. Plenty of BioShock devotees wondered how the series’ trademark atmospheric first-person trappings would transition to the smaller screen.

As it turns out that, they wouldn’t have. In fact, the BioShock Vita entry wouldn’t have been a first-person shooter at all. Instead, Levine, a rabid turn-based strategy fan, revealed on Twitter yesterday his surprising would-be plans for the title: “a Final Fantasy Tacticsstyle thing set in pre-fall Rapture.”

Since 2K owns the BioShock property, a future BioShock entry on the Vita isn’t totally out of the question—without Levine’s involvement, of course—just highly unlikely. But it sounds like the parties that could make it happen are far apart at this point: “2K and Sony couldn’t put a deal together when I last checked,” Levine said. “They seemed way more optimistic about this back in 2011.”

In retrospect, perhaps we should’ve seen an experimental take on BioShock from Levine with this project. In October 2011, Levine told Joystiq that he’d “rather do something that’s an experiment and that’s a little different and is unique for the franchise.”

We may still see that with BioShock in the future—but not from Levine.

That time in 2004 when, suffering from utter exhaustion, he decided to take a break on the creepy, dilapidated—and possibly cursed—La-Z-Boy at Konami’s Silent Hill booth.
