Kickstarter hits $1 billion in pledges since its 2009 launch

Who knew that Swaziland, a tiny, landlocked kingdom in Southern Africa, had contributed $2,380 to Kickstarter projects over the past four years? For that matter, who knew that Kickstarter backers came from Antarctica? Well, they do11 of them so far.

Kickstarter has revealed that information—and much more—on its One Billion Dollars page, which celebrates the $1 billion pledged to projects on the crowdfunding service since its April 2009 launch. Kickstarter’s stats page shows that “Games” is the top-earning category, with $215 million—no surprise, considering the notoriety the service received after Double Fine’s massively successful Broken Age campaign. The One Billion Dollars page reveals that at more than $21 million, Germany has contributed the most of any non-English-speaking country to all Kickstarter projects, while Japan, at more than $7 million, has pledged the top amount outside the Anglosphere and Western Europe.

Some other information included on the page might be worth keeping in mind for anyone interested in launching a Kickstarter campaign of their own. Wednesday and Thursday are the largest days of the week for pledges, with a severe drop-off on weekends (an easily observed trend if you pay attention to Kickstarter campaigns, but it’s interesting to see it confirmed here). The 13th and 1st are the top two days of the month, but stay away from the 29thit has the lowest pledge amount of any day outside of the 31st (which, of course, only appears in seven of the 12 months).
