The mechanic works by earning hearts from a level and then betting those hearts on the next level, the more you bet the higher the intensity (difficulty) and completing levels with a higher intensity offers better rewards and prizes.
EGM’s TAKE: It’s a neat little mechanic that will actually reward players for taking on a harder difficultly, similar to how achievements and trophies do. Right now, few handheld games offer a reason to up the difficulty other than personal challenge. However we like how Kid Icarus: Uprising rewards you for upping the difficult, giving +you access to better armor, weapons and items.
