Killzone Dev Details Shadow Fall’s OWL Drone Functionality

Posted on June 25, 2013 AT 03:30pm

In a post on the official Killzone blogKillzone: Shadow Fall lead designer Eric Boltjes outlined some details about the game’s OWL drone.

According to Boltjes, the OWL features four distinct mode states that are accessed by using the DualShock 4′s touch pad. Attack Mode looses the drone on specific targets or targets within range, Zipline Mode turns the machine into a high-tech zipline for the player’s use, Stun Mode operates similar to Attack Mode, but with area-of-effect shock blasts that affect electronics as well as enemies, and Shield Mode creates an barrier of energy that protects the player while still allowing them to fire through the shield.

“We wanted to give the player more control over buddies in our game, and we quickly gravitated towards utilizing our futuristic theme to create something very technologically advanced and also extremely useful in the field,” Boltjes wrote in the post. “It was important that it was easy to use in the fray of battle and have suitable abilities for every type of situation the game throws at you, on top of all the other abilities/weapons the Shadow Marshal has at his disposal.”

Killzone: Shadow Fall launches exclusively on PlayStation 4 alongside the console this fall.
