Kingdom Hearts

In celebration of Mickey Mouse’s 90th birthday, Square Enix has compiled some of the Keyblade wielder’s best moments from the Kingdom Hearts series.

The trailer, which you can check out below, focuses on the mouse king and his presence in several of the role-playing franchise’s entries. Fans of Mickey can revisit his iconic entrance in Kingdom Hearts II, his battle against the Demon Tower from Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth by Sleep – A Fragmentary Passage, and more. The developer also fittingly used the battle theme from Kingdom Hearts II‘s Timeless River world, “Old Friends, Old Rivals,” as the score for the footage.

While the series hasn’t been around as long as Disney’s mascot, Mickey has been a featured character in the RPGs since they began 16 years ago. Over time, he’s grown into a key figure in the Kingdom Hearts story, with players learning that he was involved in the battle against Xehanort, the series’ antagonist, before Sora ever came into the picture.

While it’s likely that Mickey will be just as important in Kingdom Hearts III, there are still many questions about some of the other Guardians of Light. During this year’s E3, the developer revealed in its Frozen world announcement trailer that Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep‘s Aqua will succumb to the darkness, meaning she won’t be fighting alongside the Keyblade wielders. However, fans have theorized that Mickey and Riku will travel to the Realm of Darkness to fight for Aqua and break Master Xehanort’s power over her.

Whether or not that’s how it comes to pass, though, the developer has given fans another reminder of Mickey’s importance in the series, as well as his 90 long and successful years as an icon in entertainment.

Kingdom Hearts III is set to launch for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on January 29th, 2019.
