Prior to Sony’s E3 press conference, attendees of the Kingdom Hearts Orchestra World Tour on June 10th were presented with a special treat by series director Tetsuya Nomura; an exclusive trailer for the highly anticipated Kingdom Hearts III.
EGM was able to attend the show, where Nomura explained no further details on Kingdom Hearts III will be revealed at E3, but an additional full-length trailer, which will include the reveal of a new world, will drop during D23 Expo on July 15th.
The clip, seen below, features new polished gameplay and returning villains. Sora free falls onto Mount Olympus, a new locale-themed around Disney’s Hercules, to defeat a horde of Heartless. The previously revealed gun mechanic is featured, with a large lightning-based weapon that seems to be available when using a new form called Counter Shield. Sora also enters Second Form, which looks to increase the range of his attacks, allowing him to defeat large groups of enemies with ease. Sora also slides on a few pipes and runs up a mountainside to defeat the Rock Titan using FlowMotion action, originally featured in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream, Drop, Distance.
A few new small strands of the plot are also revealed, including a scene with Maleficent and Pete asking Hades about a black box, referencing the mysterious case seen in Kingdom Hearts X Back Cover. Nomura has previously stated the black box will be opened in Kingdom Hearts III to reveal its contents, so if Maleficent wants it, it most likely houses a form of power. The most tantalizing moment comes in the clip’s final segment, where Sora talks to a very much alive Xemnas and Xehanort’s Heartless. Apparently, Sora is attempting to bring Roxas back to life, which Xemnas mocks and reveals only channeling the darkness could give Sora what he wants. Could this be tied to the black box somehow? Perhaps it holds a dark keyblade with necromancer powers.
While an official release date announcement still isn’t looking promising anytime soon, it will be interesting to see what new world the next entry will feature to join the previously announced Tangled and Big Hero 6-themed areas.
