Game director Tetsuya Nomura pictures the events of Kingdom Hearts III as part of the canon Toy Story timeline, according to a recent interview.
This year’s D23 brought us brand-new footage of Kingdom Hearts III, including a long segment taking place in the Toy Story world. Sora, Donald, and Goofy get to meet Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and a number of other toys from the film. When they meet, though, it won’t be to just retell the story of the original Toy Story—it’ll be an entirely new continuation of the movie series’ plot.
Toy Story and Toy Story 2 are pretty close together, timeline-wise. At the end of the first movie, Andy gets a puppy, and it’s still a young dog for the events of Toy Story 2. There’s a large gap, however, between the end of Toy Story 2 and the start of Toy Story 3—long enough for Buster the dog to grow old and for Andy to grow up and go to college. As Nomura told Famitsu (via SiliconEra), the events of Kingdom Hearts III will take place during this long gap, and the events are something that could have happened on the official Toy Story timeline.
This could hint that we’ll see some interesting storylines in the other new Disney worlds we’ll explore—expansions of the story, rather than retellings with some Kingdom Hearts flavor.
Kingdom Hearts III is set to release in 2018 for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
