Kojima Suggests Testing Waters with Game Equivalent of TV Pilots

While talking about game development for next-gen consoles, Hideo Kojima proposed that developers should create a downloadable, TV pilot-style teasers for game projects to test the waters.

According to Kojima, “a very deep, 20-30 hour game” that takes three or four years years to develop puts the makers at risk. But he has a solution to this.

“I think there’s a different way of tackling this problem: something similar to a TV series, where you can use pilot episodes to test the waters before you jump completely into the project,” said Kojima. “It can be distributed via download channels, so the player can try it out before production continues. Something like that wouldn’t take that long to create, maybe a year, and if it’s successful, you can continue.”

Kojima also commented on the growing social scene surrounding videogames and how that might influence game development.

“I think there’ll be a social aspect to game creation, because it will be more interactive,” Kojima said. “You’ll get user feedback, and I think there’ll be this back-and-forth between users and creators.”

Considering the nature of the PS4 and its “Share” button, this might not be so far-fetched. However, I think this is arguably tantamount to having an author or film writer compromise their creative vision by pandering to fan demand. Ultimately, I suppose, time will tell.
