L.A. Noire and Red Dead Redemption – Inspiration for Halo 4?

THE BUZZ: 343 Industries is keeping very quiet about anything story related in Halo 4, however, some of the developers inspirations may offer insight.
Josh Holmes, Creative Director on Halo 4, told OXM that he was blown away by the narrative in Red Dead Redemption. “To me, that was such an amazing narrative experience. Being able to express myself in an open world environment in whatever way I saw fit, but also managed within that experience to give me the spine of a story that went through all of it. It wasn’t just window dressing – it managed to make me care about the characters and the places, and that makes it really stand out,” he said.
Also Kiki Wolfkill, Executive Producer, was asked the same question and said L.A. Noire was her biggest inspiration. “I wouldn’t say the whole truth or lie mechanic worked – or at least I don’t read people well, apparently – but they’re really pushing things forward in terms of characters and story. I’m mostly interested in storytelling and it’s fascinating to see how games like LA Noire, Heavy Rain and even Call of Duty tell their story. It seems to be the place where games are evolving the most right now, outside of technology,” she said.
Could these point towards the direction that the team is going to take Halo 4′s story? We’re not saying that Halo is going to become open-world or anything, but we may see the characters being developed in a new way, taking point from these games.
EGM’s TAKE: 343 improving the narrative in Halo 4 can only be good for the franchise.
