Latest Dark Souls II trailer shows a whole mess of new player-killing monsters

Posted on January 14, 2014 AT 08:00pm

A new trailer for Dark Souls II titled “Cursed” showcases some of the massive monstrosities players will be pit against in From Software’s sequel sequel to their 2011 hit.

Beyond better visuals, Dark Souls II will boast a more fleshed out customization system for weapons and armor, an improved multiplayer system for both cooperative and competitive play, and an unforgiving, brutal world to explore that’s almost twice the size as the original Dark Souls’ Lodran—a region to the north called Drangleic. It is in Drangleic that the game’s protagonist ventures to find a cure for her or his curse.

According to co-director Tomohiro Shibuya, Dark Souls II, though set on the same planet as the original game, does not represent a direct sequel—Drangleic is a completely different region than Lodran. There is, however, some link between the two games, possibly revolving around not a question of where, but a question of when. Shibuya has repeatedly mentioned that “Time” is an important factor in Dark Souls II.

Dark Souls II launches on PS3 and Xbox 360 March 11 in North America, March 14 in PAL regions. A Windows PC version will come following the launch of the console versions. For more on Dark Souls II, check out our resident Souls expert Eric L. Patterson’s TGS 2013 preview.
