The latest South Park episode is good for more than a laugh, as it also sets up the backstory of the upcoming South Park: The Fractured but Whole.
The South Park episode “Franchise Prequel” aired on Comedy Central on the night of October 11th, telling the story of how Professor Chaos—better known as Butters—devised a plan to sow discord amongst The Coon and Friends. This discord would generate a fissure between members of the group, forming the two different factions the player can choose between. The episode ends with a scene very reminiscent of the game’s E3 2016 trailer, setting it up for the player character.
Here’s the official synopsis from Comedy Central: “Professor Chaos has found the perfect tool to spread lies and misinformation about Coon and Friends. In trying to save their reputation, the boys come face to face with Mark Zuckerberg.”
The episode, like the show in general, is very topical, referencing Harvey Weinstein and the ongoing investigation in Russian meddling in the election. The upcoming game will be almost as relevant, according to its developers, with references to events as recent as this summer.
South Park: The Fractured but Whole launches October 17th on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game’s season pass was recently detailed, including two story expansions and a host of other bonus content.
