New Shop in A Link Between Worlds Allows Players to Tackle Dungeons in Any Order

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will deviate from the series’ usual gated approach to dungeons, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed earlier today during his latest Nintendo Direct presentation.

After getting through the introductory content of A Link Between Worlds, players will eventually gain access to a new merchant locale called Ravio’s Shop. At Ravio’s, players can rent or purchase items usually restricted to key dungeon artifacts, such as the bow and arrows or the hookshot.

“In previous Zelda games, there were this sort of unwritten rule that said you could only get a new item at a new dungeon, and puzzles in that dungeon would primarily be solved using this item,” Iwata said. “You might even say it’s one of the contentions of Zelda.

“But this time around, we wanted to buck tradition and transform the way you played Zelda, and to offer a brand new gameplay experience. To do this, we had to reconsider this particular Zelda convention.”

As a result, A Link Between Worlds has more freedom and a greater sense of exploration than previous Zelda games. If they so choose, players could essentially “break” the order in which dungeons should be tackled by renting or purchasing the key item required to get through a particular dungeon from Ravio’s instead of waiting until they find the item on their own.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds launches on Nintendo 3DS November 22 in North America and Europe.
