LEGO: Lord Of The Rings Isn’t Trying To Make Tolkien Nerds Angry

Although The Lord of the Rings is a very serious fantasy epic that covers a lot of serious, mature themes, that isn’t stopping the Lego Group from turning it into a whimsical game. Does that make you upset?

‘Fret not.

Developer Traveller’s Tales may take a comedic theme with franchises like Batman and Harry Potter, but LEGO: The Lord of the Rings won’t be so cheeky, as development manager Darryl Kelley tells GameSpot:

But I think the way the game is designed, it follows the story. There’s no deviation from that, so I think for your Middle-earth fans and your Tolkien purists, they’re going to appreciate what we’re able to accomplish, but also still provide those moments where even if you are a Tolkien purist, it’s a moment where you can laugh. It creates a more lighthearted instance where what would be a more serious theme or tone, so I think it’s going to appeal to a lot of different consumers.

Kelley also admitted that while his company is always worried about overflowing the gaming market with LEGO titles, the upcoming next-gen console switch and current variety of platforms actually puts them in a very good spot.

Over 78 million LEGO games have been sold at retailers since 1997, according to VGChartz, which easily puts it in the top 25 of all-time video game franchises—expect LEGO: The Lords of the Rings to be just as successful.
