On May 25th, Sony will be releasing a new PlayStation 3 bundle—one based around Activision’s blockbuster-selling Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.

Yes, Sony announced today that the bundle will be coming soon, and will be retailing for $299. For that price, you’ll get a 320GB PlayStation 3, all of the standard inclusions (controller, power cable, etc.), plus a PS3 copy of Modern Warfare 3. So, basically, you buy the PS3, you get the game for free.

Now, call me crazy here, but it’s like six months since Modern Warfare 3 came out—why do a bundle for the game now? Also, why is the American division of Sony Computer Entertainment so allergic to actual system variants? Why not bring over one of the Japan-exclusive colors to be part of the bundle, such as the red or blue PS3s? Or even better, some sort of actual limited edition system design? When Microsoft did their Modern Warfare 3 bundle for the Xbox 360, consumers got an exclusive console variant that had a customer paint job.

Why the boring old black? Why is Sony Computer Entertainment American so obsessed with giving us only black hardware most of the time! It’s a conspiracy, I tell you!
