Mark Rein: Sony, Microsoft to ‘Fully Embrace’ Free-to-Play on New Consoles

Posted on May 9, 2013 AT 12:55pm

According to Epic Games VP Mark Rein, Sony and Microsoft will be pushing the free-to-play model much harder on PS4 and the next Xbox.

Speaking at the Game Horizon conference in Newcastle, UK, Mark Rein said, “The next-gen consoles are going to be fully embracing the free-to-play and these IAP-type [in-app purchase] business models. So in case you don’t know that I’m putting that out there. Sony and Microsoft are both going heavily in that area.”

“Well, I’m telling you. I’m telling you what they’re telling developers,” he added.

Sony has confirmed that free-to-play shooter Blacklight: Retribution will be PS4′s first pub fund title. As for the Xbox side of things, expect more details when Microsoft reveals their next console on May 21. If not then, perhaps at this year’s E3 in June.
