Crystal Dynamics’ upcoming Avengers game might have more in common with The Division than past superhero games.
Back in January, Marvel and Square Enix announced a multi-year, multi-game partnership, focused on bringing Marvel’s superhero universe to life in games. This Avengers game is the first of that lot, and it’s being worked on by the teams behind the recent Tomb Raider and Deus Ex games.
While none of the companies involved have officially released more information on the game, one sharp-eyed NeoGAF user has spotted a series of job postings from Crystal Dynamics that give us a few more clues.
First up is a call for a Lead Level Designer, particularly one who understands “the social implications of shared gameplay,” can build “various game modes and campaigns,” and is comfortable with delivering a series of “cutting-edge online experiences.”
Another post calls for a Combat Systems Designer to work on the Avengers project, and it specifically calls out that the game will have “combat systems that apply to a 3rd person cover based action adventure game.”
Yet another call for a Network Engineer asks for an applicant who can “own vast systems of our multiplayer game engine,” “relentlessly improve our online experience,” and “work with designers to specify and cost multiplayer features.”
A third-person cover-based shooter is certainly different from what we’ve seen in past Marvel game adaptations. A press release sent out shortly after the project was announced revealed that the Avengers game would “introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come” (via WWG), so the project definitely seems to be heading in a Division-like direction.
Of course, the third-person shooter moniker in itself raises some questions. How will hiding behind cover work when you’re playing as the Hulk, for example? Since Marvel has a hand in the partnership, the characters probably won’t stray too far from their canon abilities and powers, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
The Avengers project is expected to release in 2018.
