Mass Effect Figures Will Include DLC for Mass Effect 3

THE BUZZ: A new line of Mass Effect figures will be coming in the second quarter of this year—and when they do, they’ll include DLC for Mass Effect 3.

EGM’s TAKE: Ah, the devious ways of product synergy! Had you been looking at those upcoming Mass Effect figures with desire, but not enough to make you break down and get them? Well now you’ll have to in order to get more gear for Commander Shepard’s final adventures!

Here’s the product info for the figures from bigbadtoystore.com:

Bonus Downloadable Game Content: Each figure includes an in-pack card giving you access to downloadable in-game bonus content. Each figure contains different in-game content, exclusive to North American released product. Collect all 8 for the full experience!

Ah, but wait—what exactly you’ll get with each figure isn’t certain, according to the official BioWare online store:

This product contains a code that can be redeemed for a downloadable content pack for Mass Effect 3 multi-player. It is slightly randomized during the registration and could include powerful new weapons and new characters. The pack could also include character boosters, weapon modifications, and weapon upgrades to make your multi-player squad stronger. (Only supported on XBox360 and PC.)

So—my full opinion on this will have to wait until we find out exactly what this DLC consists of. If it is items—and especially “new characters”—that can’t be obtained any other way, I’m going to really, really not be happy. Having to pre-order games at certain stores to get exclusive pieces of a game is bad enough—having to buy related toys to get other exclusive pieces of content would be inexcusable.

If the content is not exclusive to these toys, and this will simply be a different way to obtain the content, then I probably won’t have a problem with the overall concept. Well, except for the fact that PS3 owners are being left out of this deal—that somewhat stings as well.

What do you think about this idea? Would you support the idea of related products like action figures containing codes for downloadable content?
