Epic Games has delivered on several promises with its latest update for Fortnite’s free-to-play spin-off Battle Royale.
Kicking things off is the introduction of leaderboards and a progression system. Following the update players will be able to compare their progress against other players in solo, duo, squad, and total wins. There are two types of leaderboards in the game: Divisions and Friends. The Division leaderboards group 50 active players together for each of the three game modes to see who can take the top spot. Each week, players will be assigned a new division on the weekly reset on Wednesday. While the Friends leaderboards does exactly what you’d expect and compares performance to friends.
The previously mentioned progression system takes the form of season levels. During the first season, players can reach level 100, with a unique seasonal banner available for reaching level 10 and a unique seasonal glider for reaching level 25. There’s also a seasonal banner that will update from levels 2-49 to show progression during matches.
The next of the big features is the Item Shop and Locker. Players can now head to the Item Shop and pick up a number of new outfits, gliders and pickaxes for their character in exchange for V-Bucks (the game’s real money currency). These items can then be equipped in the new Locker menu. Sadly, there’s no way to earn V-Bucks in Battle Royale, but they can be earned in the game’s Save the World PvE mode and carried over.
Other changes included in this update include in-game voice chat for consoles, a new “Slurp Juice” consumable that restores one health and shield for 25 seconds, and the ability to automatically pick up ammo, building resources, and traps by running over them.
