The Last Of Us

A new developer diary for Naughty Dog’s upcoming post-apocalyptic survival game The Last of Us details the game’s infected once-humans.

In the video, creative director Neil Druckmann, creative director and game director Bruce Straley talk at length about what inspired the infected, describe some of the types players will encounter with Joel and Ellie, and the state of society in the post-infected wasteland the world has fallen into.

“It all started when we saw a documentary about this fungus called cordyceps, and the way that fungus works is it infects different species of insects,” Druckmann says. “The fungus develops inside them, burrows its way into its mind, and takes control, essentially, of the insect. What if this thing jumps species and infected people—that was the earliest inspiration.”

The Last of Us infects PlayStation 3 June 14 worldwide. A demo on the God of War: Ascension disc will unlock later this month.
