Tribute Games’ Contra-inspired run n’ gun shoo ‘em up Mercenary Kings will arrive on PlayStation 4 sometime this winter, the developer announced.
Assuming “winter” in this instance applies to Q4 of the calendar year, that puts the Mercenary Kings release either later in November or sometime December. But “January” and even “February” constitute winter months, and in his post on the PlayStation Blog, Tribute Games writer Yannick Belzil did not specifically mention “Q4.” Just winter.
Mercenary Kings was revealed during E3 2013 to be among the slew of indie games coming to Sony’s fourth home console. Modeled after “nice, old-fashioned,” 80s and 90s-style run-and-gun platformers, Mercenary Kings boasts extensive weapon and itemization customization and crafting, with over 300 gun parts to combine across more than 100 missions.
Part of what excites Belzil most about Mercenary Kings on the PS4 is its co-op multiplayer.
“Is there better friendship cement than blasting away giant Exo-suited soldiers or evil gods from other dimensions!?” Belzil mused on his PlayStation Blog post. “There could be, but we can’t think of any. And while it’s still early for us to talk about it, the connectivity possibilities between PS4 and Vita are quite exciting for further multiplayer mayhem.”
Developer Tribute Games is comprised of developers who worked on 2010’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, and like Scott Pilgrim features pixel art by Paul Robertson, who also contributed to Polytron’s Fez by way of wildlife art and some animation work.
