Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has received an M for Mature rating in the United States for all the usual reasons (blood, gore, violence, language) and one rare descriptor: sexual violence.
According to the ESRB’s rating summary, Ground Zeroes contains an audio-only rape scene “in which a female character is sexually assaulted by male characters; while there is no visual depiction, sounds of ripped clothing and struggle can be heard. The words ‘f**k’ and ‘sh*t’ are heard in the dialogue.”
In a statement issued to Kotaku, the ESRB revealed that the only other game to earn a “sexual violence” descriptor is 2006’s Animamundi, a Japanese gothic horror visual novel released on Windows PC.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes launches on PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 March 18, 2014 in North America, March 20 in Europe.
