Yesterday various Xbox Live account holders were treated to a nice surprise when they found they had received a random amount of Microsoft Points for no particular reason.

It turns out that this was a system error connected to the Xbox Live Rewards Program and if you were scheduled to receive points this month the system accidentally credited you multiple times instead of once.

Microsoft has now officially commented on this error with the following;

We are aware that some Xbox LIVE members may have received an unexplained deposit of Microsoft Points to their accounts and are working to resolve the issue. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.

We are actively retracting any Microsoft Points deposited into member accounts accidentally. However, Microsoft Points that have already been redeemed for content will not be revoked.

So if you have already spent the points you recieved Microsoft will not be charging you for them however if you left them in your account then they will be removed.

Did anyone manage to benefit from this error?
