This may or may not come as a shock to you, but Microsoft has confirmed that the Xbox One will be region locked, only allowing games from the same region as the console to be played on it–this does not mean that playing with people from other regions is restricted, you can still play with friends from anywhere in the world, you just can’t import games and play them (following some confusion in the comments).

“Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale. We will continue to work with our partners to follow these guidelines with Xbox One,” a Microsoft representative told Digital Trends.

The majority of games on Xbox 360 are region locked. Microsoft recently filed a claim to secure the Xboxone.com and Xboxone.net domains from a U.K. resident.
