If you’re part of that unlucky one percent of FEZ players who can’t use the game’s save-file-deleting patch, you’re probably bummed that there’s no fix incoming. Phil Fish has gone on record about the issue, saying that Microsoft’s high price for re-certification makes a patch adjustment impractical, but the Big M isn’t taking that lying down.
Although Phil Fish and Polytron can’t afford the $40,000 price it takes to re-certifiy FEZ for Xbox Live Arcade, Microsoft says that’s the developer’s call if they don’t want to pay the fee:
Polytron and their investor, Trapdoor, made the decision not to work on an additional title update for Fez. Microsoft Studios chose to support this decision based on the belief that Polytron/Trapdoor were in the best position to determine what the acceptable quality level is for their game.
While we do not disclose the cost of Title Updates, we did offer to work with Trapdoor to make sure that wasn’t a blocking issue. We remain huge fans of Fez.
Judging by the wording in their statement, it sounds like Polytron and Microsoft tried to negotiate on a price that would make a patch for the, er, patch, more feasible for the dev team.
Obviously, it didn’t work out.
Although a patch fix won’t be in the mix for the Xbox Live Arcade release, FEZ will eventually be releasing for PlayStation Network, PC, and the Steam Store. Maybe then, all the kinks will be ironed out with a completely bug-free version for all other platforms, and no more game-crippling accidents will hurt future buyers.
