Microsoft Renews ‘Killer Instinct’ Trademark, Confirms Nothing Else

Posted on September 17, 2012 AT 03:00pm

Usually, trademark-specific news websites are left to break the news about renewals and new filings, but Microsoft actually decided to flip the script this time. As such, we’re still excited about this latest update.

As indicated with a short note from official Xbox Live website PlayXBLA, the trademark for Killer Instinct has officially been renewed, which doesn’t mean a whole lot by itself:

Our legal eagles have authorized us to say: “We have either renewed or refiled a trademark application in various jurisdictions.”

That’s it! Have a good Monday!

Of course, the assumption is that Microsoft will do something with the Killer Instinct franchise since they own the rights to it. One idea that’s been tossed around by just about every gaming publication is an HD re-release on Xbox Live.

Additionally, Microsoft’s trademark rights also give them the advantage of a console exclusive since Killer Instinct was originally a property of Rare Ltd., which is now a Microsoft subsidiary. Basically, that’s money on the table.
