Microsoft Surface Tablet Starts Next World Conquest Phase This October

Posted on July 30, 2012 AT 05:14pm

It’s all coming together—Microsoft’s Surface tablet will reportedly be releasing this October, and alongside it, the Windows 8 operating system. If you’ve been playing attention, the 10-inch tablet is Microsoft’s first attempt at building their own hardware, and could possibly be a cornerstone in their alleged plans to conquer living rooms with Xbox Live and Kinect.

VentureBeat reports that a recent SEC (Securites and Exchange Commission) file has confirmed that both the tablet and the Windows OS will launch simultaneously on October 26th.

According to the release, both will contribute to a “unified” experience that’s all built off the Windows platform:

We invest significant resources in enabling and developing smart connected devices that offer a unified, seamless experience across a common platform. Whether a PC, Windows Phone, Xbox 360, or the newly announced Surface.

The next version of our operating system, Windows 8, will be generally available on October 26, 2012. At that time, we will begin selling the Surface, a series of Microsoft-designed and manufactured hardware devices.

If it sounds familiar, it should—not only does the Xbox Live “Metro” update look unmistakably like the Windows Phone interface, but it also echoes data found in supposedly leaked documents from Microsoft regarding their entertainment division. Specifically, Microsoft wants their Windows Phone, “slate” tablets, and PC products to sync with Xbox 720 and Xbox Live as one unit.

It’s already been confirmed that the Surface will have some Halo 4 connectivity, plus Xbox SmartGlass compatibility.

There’s no price quite yet, but don’t expect it to be too expensive. After all, at 10 inches, it’s going right into iPad competition.
