Microsoft to ‘Further Monetize’ Xbox Live Later this Year

Posted on April 16, 2012 AT 06:30am

THE BUZZ: Microsoft is set to implement a new strategy later this year in order to “further monetize” Xbox Live.

Group product planner, Praveen Rutnam, mentions on his CV: ”Developed strategy to further monetize Xbox LIVE subscriber base that will be implemented for holiday 2012.”

No further details were offered.

EGM’s TAKE: Now there’s no need to go crazy and start screaming about price hikes while running in circles. It’s already been rumored that Microsoft plans to ditch Microsoft Points in favor of real world currencies, could this be the system that he is referring to? If so, then the time for Points is nearly at an end. Another, less likely, option is the introduction of a new tier of Xbox Live subscriptions, which will cost more but offer better benefits to users. This has been spoken about many times in the past as more features get added to the service.

What do you think the system could be? Will you be happy to see the end of Microsoft Points? Let us know in the comments below.
