Microsoft Wants You To Use Kinect… For Ads

Posted on June 21, 2011 AT 01:49pm

Will the hot new trend for Microsoft’s Kinect peripheral be interactive advertisements? According to The New York Times, that could indeed be the case.

According to them, Microsoft is set to announced “NUads” – short for “Natural User-interface Ads” – a new method for providing interactive advertisements to Xbox 360 users.

These ads will supposedly “let users interact with advertising on the console dashboard or embedded in games and other video content”, which is being done to help advertisers keep the attention of Xbox owners where TV ads no longer can.

With these NUads, users will be able to, for example, use voice commands to send a message about the ad to Twitter or Facebook, or say things like “Xbox More” to get more information about a particular ad.

Want even more excitement? How about the ability where “advertisers can prompt users to vote on a topic by asking the user to wave their hand in front of the console and select their favorite pizza topping, superhero or clothing brand.”

Needless to say, people in the marketing industry made statements about how excited they are about all of these great new ideas. Also needless to say, actual Xbox 360 owners everywhere may not be quite as excited.
