Despite a small slip in overall revenue, Microsoft still sounds very happy with their sales over the last few months in their 2012 fiscal year. Much of that is thanks to the Xbox 360, which is still posting strong numbers in the seventh year of its lifecycle, moving over 1.1 million units during the last 2012 quarter.
An exhaustively detailed list of financial investor notes was released by Microsoft today, with the company recapping everything they’ve been doing since the last time they tallied up the books. In particular, the Xbox 360 made up more than its fair share of money, with Microsoft claiming that the console was still outselling the PS3 and Wii after 18 months:
· We shipped 1.1 million Xbox 360 consoles compared to 1.7 million during the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2011. Even in the soft console market, Xbox 360 maintained its market share leadership position in the U.S.
· Xbox LIVE membership increased more than 15% year over year as Xbox continued to add differentiated gaming and entertainment opportunities.
Out of all the system’s features, Xbox Live has proven to have the longest legs, thanks to frequent updates and content additions made year over year. When Microsoft launches their SmartGlass companion this holiday season, expect a spike in activity for the console over the next few months.
As far as Microsoft’s claim that the Xbox 360 has been the top-selling console for over a year, that’s a little harder to quantify outside of their own data. Console sales in general have been falling year after year, and with people waiting on new systems or moving over to mobile devices, all three console makers have really been feeling the crunch.
