THE BUZZ: Markus Persson, creator of Minecraft, announced via his Tumblr page yesterday that he will be stepping down from future updates to the game and Jens Bergensten will be taking his place as lead developer, effective immediately. Who is Jens Bergensten exactly? According to Persson, Jens has worked with him on Minecraft over the last year and Persson appears confident in his decision to have Jens at the helm. He had this to say on his blog.
We’ve been working together on Minecraft for a year now, and I’m amazed at how much in synch we two are when it comes to how to design the game. And when we don’t agree, we discuss it and something much better comes out at a result. He’s truly a great person to work with, and I feel very confident handing over the leadership of Minecraft to him.
The reason for the move is for Markus to take some much deserved time off, as well as taking on a new project.
EGM’s TAKE: Markus’ confidence in Jens is contagious, and if there is one thing Minecraft fans have been able to do, it’s trust in Markus Persson. He’s made all the right decisions thus far, so unless he gets back and Jens has turned Minecraft into a corporate sponsored cart racer, let’s stay optimistic. And yes, it would be called Minecart.
