Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson thinks Microsoft’s decision to open the Xbox One One up to self-publishing indies and make every Xbox One console usable as a debug kit is “a wonderful idea.”
“I think it’s a wonderful idea to have the actual box be the dev kits,” Notch told Edge Online. “This makes it easier for both the developer and for Microsoft, and presumably they could make it a lot cheaper since they’d only sell unlock codes. I realize there are other factors at play here, though, like a perceived need to make sure only ‘legitimate’ developers get access to it, so a monetary barrier might still be in place.”
On Wednesday, Microsoft confirmed that every Xbox One can be used for development, and that the company would support self-publishing indies in an iTunes-style fashion.
Notch is among many notable indie developers who have expressed their approval of Microsoft’s decision to make their platform more accessible to indies.
