More than 4.2 million PlayStation 4 units have been sold between the console’s November 15 launch date and December 28, Sony announced today.

In addition, over 9.7 million PS4 games, physical and digital, were sold through the holiday season worldwide.

“The momentum of the PS4 system keeps getting stronger and we couldn’t be more thrilled gamers worldwide are enjoying the incredibly immersive gaming experiences along with deep social capabilities and entertainment provided by our network,” Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. president and group CEO Andrew House said in a statement. “After a remarkable launch, we look forward to bringing even more exciting content and continuing to explore the power of the PS4 system by adding new features and services, including PlayStation Now, in 2014.”

Earlier today, House announced PlayStation Now, Sony’s videogame-streaming service powered by Gaikai, would be coming to PS3 and PS4 this summer, with a Vita launch to follow. PlayStation Now allows Sony to stream PlayStation 1, 2, 3, and 4 games not only to Sony consoles and handhelds, but also tablets, computers, and smart TVs.

Sales figures for Sony’s forth PlayStation console follow Microsoft’s announcement yesterday that over three million Xbox One consoles have been sold worldwide.
