Fresh off of Sub-Zero’s introduction as a playable character in Injustice 2, NetherRealm Studios creative director, Ed Boon, is teasing the addition of another Mortal Kombat character in the DC superhero fighter. At least, that’s how some fans are taking it.
The tease comes from a tweet posted by Boon that shows a close-up image of Mortal Kombat character Cyrax as seen in the film Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, following Cyrax’s defeat at the hands of Jax and Sonya Blade.
What this tweet means is anyone’s guess. It’s possible that Boon is teasing Cryax as a DLC character in Injustice 2, and that maybe the silhouette that we previously thought referenced Aquaman villain Black Manta could actually be a redesigned form of Cyrax. After all, Sub-Zero’s model in Injustice 2 diverts from his previous incarnations in the Mortal Kombat series quite a bit.
But that seems a bit too obvious. Digging a little deeper reveals that Boon might be pulling the ol’ switcheroo by showing one character but teasing another. Instead of teasing Cyrax, Boon might actually be referencing the ruler of the Outworld, Shao Khan. You see, the image that Boon posted shows the moment in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation when Cyrax’s Outworld tattoo turns into an actual dragon, which is Shao Khan’s beast form in the film. Why else would he post that specific frame, considering there are plenty of full-on shots of Cyrax he could have used?
Yet another interpretation of this tweet is that Ed Boon is trolling us all. However, we’re probably pretty close to getting a reveal for the second pack of DLC fighters for Injustice 2 now that we finally have a release date for Starfire, and with our previous assumption that Raiden will be added as a future DLC fighter, it’s possible that each fighter pack will contain at least one Mortal Kombat character.
Only Ed Boon knows for sure.
Injustice 2 is available for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
