Mortal Kombat

A series of tweets from Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon that began this past weekend seem to be counting down to what’s presumably a game-related announcement on June 2.

On Sunday, IGN reported on a tweet from Bone stating, “Square root of 841,” which is 29. The next day, Monday, he asked “How many days in a (non-leap-year) February?”—28. And today, Boon posted a 13-second YouTube clip from The Simpsons season 17, episode 19: “Girls Just Want to Have Sums,” in which the number 27 announces itself. You get the idea.

NetherRealm Studios is rumored to have one of two projects in the works, perhaps even both simultaneously. In February, actor Keifer Sutherland revealed to IGN during an interview that he had wrapped up work on Mortal Kombat, saying that it was not at all like MGS5. And during WonderCon last month, rumors began circulating following the DC Comics panel that an Injustice: Gods Among Us sequel was in the works.

Neither of these have been acknowledged or confirmed by developer NetherRealm.

Boon’s announcement, supposin’ it isn’t just a completely random, non-gaming-related thing he’s teasing, would come one full week before E3 2014 kicks off with June 9 press conferences.
