Natural Selection 2 developer Unknown Worlds have begun work on an “open world underwater exploration and construction game” titled Subnautica, the studio announced over the weekend.

In a post on the company’s official website, PR and community liaison Hugh Jeremy describes Subnautica as a game that mixes “elements of role playing, sandbox, exploration, and cinematic games” in such a way that Unknown Worlds feels it belongs to a “genre of which we do not believe has yet been invented.”

Development of Subnautica is in its earliest stages, with gameplay being in a pre-alpha prototype stage. According to Jeremy, the company does, however, want to share development openly with their fan base through Twitter and their forums to gain feedback, and will be distributing early builds of the game over the next few months.
