Nearly 70 Employees Laid Off at Glu Mobile’s Kirkland Office

Posted on May 2, 2013 AT 04:26pm

Glu Mobile’s Kirkland, WA office—formerly known as Griptonite Games—let go of 68 employees as part of their transition to a games-as-a-service company.

“We believe concentrating resources on fewer titles, with a greater centralized support infrastructure will accelerate revenue growth in Q4 2013 and beyond,” CEO Niccolode Masi said in a statement. “We made over 20 new ‘games-as-a-service’ (GaaS) hires in Q1 and anticipate hiring at a similar rate throughout the year. our goal is to shift headcount investment out of raw studio team volume and into our centralized GaaS functions. This rebalancing is expected to leave R&D costs approximately flat year over year.”

Griptonite Games was acquired by Glu Mobile in 2011. They’ve worked numerous titles for portable consoles since 1995, including Assassin’s Creed: Bloodlines, Shinobi for 3DS, and Lego Star Wars: The Video Game for GBA.
