Netflix is making a BioShock movie

Netflix has announced a deal with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a movie based on BioShock.

The streamer broke the news on Twitter and via a Hollywood Reporter story, without much in the way of detail. All we know for certain, beyond its existence, is that Vertigo Entertainment and Take-Two will produce. No writers or directors are attached, so this one’s almost certainly several years.

It’s worth remembering that this isn’t the first time Hollywood has tried to make a BioShock film. Back in 2008, The Pirates of the Caribbean‘s Gore Verbinski was attached to direct one for Universal Pictures, but that project obviously imploded.

No guarantee the Netflix version won’t suffer a similar fate, of course. But the company’s been getting pretty big into adaptations of gaming series lately—and gaming in general.

As for the BioShock series, there’s a new sequel in development at the 2K studio Cloud Chamber. No release date or title has been announced yet, but the game may be more of a sandbox than its predecessors.
