New Alien: Isolation dev diary explores making an authentic ‘lo-fi sci-fi’ aesthetic

In the latest Alien: Isolation developer diary, the team at The Creative Assembly discuss their approach to adapting a “lo-fi sci-fi” design to help make “a world in which technology won’t save you.”

“In order to stay faithful to the source, we set ourselves a rule,” art lead Jude Bond says in the video. “We wouldn’t build anything that couldn’t have been built on the original set in 1979. Everything in our game conforms to this retro-future aesthetic.”

As UI lead Jon McKellan describes, the team went so far as to try to “recreate the softness and fuzziness” of ’70’s technology by transferring gameplay footage and UI elements to VHS tape and stamp on the VHS tape and loosen the connecting cables to generate an authentic, low-fi feel and look to the visual quality.

Alien: Isolation launches on Windows PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360 October 7.
